New Fishing lines - FireLine, PowerPro and SpiderLine Can't Post

I've been asked by Beadwork Magazine, to do a survey article on, and comparason of, the various new nylon fishing lines as they apply to beading.

There are two general classes -- braided and mono filament. Monofilament is your standard (usually clear) "fishing line" and the new 2lb strength is only 0.008" diameter! Great stuff! The braided line is similar to the JellyCord, and uses several strands to add flexibility and strength to the line.

The benefits of the new lines are legion, but do those benefits really pay off, or play out, for beadworkers?

One "problem" I've had with the mono filament, is that since it has "no" [very little] memory, knots tend to want to undo themselves, unless kept under tension or glued. This may mean changing the knots, or using different techniques. This is *not* a problem with the braided cords that I've tried so far.

From a fisherman's point of view, the braided lines are great:

Any personal experiences, or comments, are welcomed, as is what you would like to know from such an article.

One general warning with the stuff, is to be careful when "testing" knots. This stuff does _not_ give, and it's likely to slice into your fingers.

"GENTLY" test the knot, don't wrap a loop or two around each index finger and pull!

If you pull hard, like with the the "old" stuff, you'll most likely be sorry.

One other nice feature, is this stuff, especially the braided lines, are _slippery_. They go through even tough beads wonderfully! Rough edges on glass beads are not likely to cut through it, but still use good bead procedure and smooth out as many rough edges as you can first.

I really would like more feedback on these things!

Our customers, the ones who've taken samples home with them, have reported problems -- as well as solutions -- when using these materials.

Fireline Fusion and Power Pro seem to snap when strung for beads, and do so in less time than the old stand by Nymo or mono filaments do. I have no explanation for it -- since the stuff *IS* stronger -- but something has to be different about beaders and fishermen in how they use it. The spiderline green is a different material, and we've not had it break or snap yet, but we have had problems with the other two brands mentioned.

Stop by, and pick up a sample bag with any $30 bead purchase, or $3 without. (this covers our time to cut/package the threads). If you just want to try a length of something, ask. :)
